Some of the rocks were a tad slippery but it really wasn't a problem. We put our flipflops into our bags and walked barefoot. There were some ropes at the waterfalls to offer support.

We chose not to take the wooden marked path, but instead climbed down the waterfall and then back up again. There are maps at the entrance showing you where to go.

The car ride there felt long but the journey was all forgotten as soon as we got there. This was such a fun afternoon! I managed to book a Grab to take us there. There is also a wooden pathway across from the waterfall with a beaut watering hole and history of the area so worth a visit if you have time. A must do, especially as an add-on when going to visit the elephants. Kids will love it and they can practically run up and down. There are stairs for the top part for those that want to avoid the steepest part or don’t want to get wet (but that’s the fun part) and there are some handrails but you still need to be in decent shape to climb. Being a change of clothes after as the best part was sitting and laying in the falls as you climb up and down. You can climb bare feet or with water shoes or sandals with a strap and rubber sole. Bring your swimsuit and a waterproof bag for your phone and cameras or leave them in a locker at the top (but you will want pictures so first option is recommended). The rocks have limestone deposits which make them sticky (just avoid the few small dark green areas which have slippery moss). Entrance was free.Ī highlight of our day tour, the water at Bua Thong is crystal clear, not like anything I have seen. We hired a taxi for the day and took in other sights, but you could do this in a half day if you left early. The best part about it is the climbing and it wouldn’t be safe for little kids. There is a small pool near the bottom where little ones could paddle but I personally wouldn’t really want to take preschool kids there. There are lots of stairs and this activity is suitable for school age kids and up. By the time we left about 1130 it was getting busier, and as it is a fairly small waterfall it could get crowded quite easily. We arrived about 930 and had the place mostly to ourselves. We went during low season and while tourist numbers were still quite low due to covid. I would recommend going as early in the day as possible. The facilities there are fantastic (clean bathrooms including showers, lots of picnic tables, drinks available) and the grounds were well maintained and very clean. The top level was the only part which was very steep and slippery and had the potential to be quite dangerous. The waterfall itself is awesome, small but very beautiful and mostly very easy to climb. The national park is stunning and cooler than the city. Quite a drive from Chiang Mai (over an hour) but definitely worth it for us.

This was such a fantastic place to visit. We stayed 2 hours and could’ve stayed longer if we brought a picnic. Keep an eye on younger ones since there’s a couple of spots you shouldn’t climb up since it’s too steep and the sign is old and not very clear. For those who don’t want to climb in the water or can’t use the ropes, there are stairs running next to it. The rocks are mostly sticky but there’s a few slippery sections and there’s ropes to help you climb so you need to be a little fit. I noticed the locals didn’t get wet at all if that’s your thing but we enjoyed laying down in the rushing water. There are storage lockers and clean spacious change rooms. It is best done barefoot, take a small water proof bag for your phone and if you want to put your flip flops in. My son (age 11), left Chiang Mai at 9am so it wasn’t busy and we were able to crawl up and down the waterfall. Going alone means you can set your own pace.

A full guided tour is not necessary, there’s no entrance fee and it’s clearly shown on a map. Beautiful wet fun! It’s a great well maintained national park and I’d recommend taking a taxi since many will wait for you.
